Tech Desk

The Tech Desk is located in the Lathrop Learning Hub and serves as a gateway to you for technical and media consulting, large-format poster printing, and media equipment checkout of hundreds of items and devices, including DSLRs, video cameras, iPads, Apple laptops, and portable projectors.

Hours of operation.

General hours of operation when school is in session are:

  • Monday through Thursday: 8:15am - 12:00 am
  • Friday: 8:15am - 5pm
  • Saturday: 1-5pm
  • Sunday: 1-9pm

Borrow computers and media equipment.

You can borrow camcorders, projectors, laptops, and a variety of other multimedia equipment for free checkout with your valid SUID card.

  • Due Dates: All items are due back by 5PM of the next day. We are open on most weekends and even some holidays (check our hours of operation). When you return your equipment, including original accompanying cases and bags, the items will be taken off your record.
  • Borrow Multiple Items: You may check out multiple pieces of equipment for free, but only one unit of each kind of equipment.
  • Renew items: Bring them to the Lathrop Tech Desk in person, with all accompanying cases and bags. An item can only be renewed if at least one duplicate item is available for checkout. If no duplicate item is available for checkout, Consultants will hold the item for one hour to give other students an opportunity to check it out before renewing it to you.
  • Extend your loan period: For an additional $10 per day per item, you may extend the borrowing period. The $10 charge is for the primary item borrowed, such as a laptop. You will not be charged for accessories that accompany the primary item, such as power cords. If you are late returning your extended items, all accessories included with the primary item will be subject to late fees.
  • Overdue Items: You will receive email notification when you keep our equipment beyond the due date. You will be billed for overdue returns for each barcoded item at a cost of $5-$15 per item, per day. If the items are never returned, you will be billed the full replacement cost. Fines must be paid online at searchworks.stanford.edu
  • Reserving Equipment: All items are available on a first-come, first-served basis. We do not have a reservation or waiting list system for our equipment. You can call the desk to ask what equipment we have in and available, but it cannot be held for you. Holds and requests for interlibrary loans of our equipment are not honored.
  • Keep Track of Your Items: You can look up Lathrop Library items you have checked out by going to http://searchworks.stanford.edu and clicking the "My Account" button.

Print posters for conferences, events, and presentations.

Getting Started

  • Order your poster online at  acomp.stanford.edu/shop.
  • For photo prints, use uncompressed and original-sized images whenever possible to retain maximum image quality.
  • We recommend keeping prints to 44 inches (or under) on all sides for quick printing.
  • When using the Stanford logo and seal, be sure to adhere to the  design guidelines  and  avoid mistakes.

Find specifics on file types, pricing and delivery on the Poster Printing page.

Get help with media projects.

Tech Desk Consultants have training in image, audio, and video editing applications. They can help you get started on your media project and answer questions about applications and equipment. Drop in during regular open hours.

Find or return lost items.

  • If you find lost or abandoned items at Lathrop Learning Hub or the Old Union Tech Space, you may turn it in to the Lathrop Tech Desk, and we will attempt to identify the owner(s). We typically hold lost items for about one month before they are donated, unless there are legal or health reasons why an item must be removed sooner.
  • If you have lost an item in Lathrop or Old Union, please come to the Lathrop Tech Desk during our open hours, and we will check the collection to see if your item has been turned in. You may also want to contact the Department of Public Safety, which operates a central Lost and Found service. They can be reached at 650-723-9639 during normal business hours.
